After serializing “Stop Stealing the Future: Chronicles of the Ukrainian Resistance” on Substack earlier this year, I’m pleased to share that the book is now available on Amazon.
This project began in 2024, when many of you supported my Kickstarter campaign to travel overland from Lisbon to Istanbul for “My Fabulous Fascist Summer Vacation.” Along the way, I interviewed historians, journalists, authors, and political observers about how fascism and authoritarianism take hold—and what a second Trump presidency might mean.
With the advantage of hindsight, many of those conversations now feel remarkably prescient.
As Ukraine emerged as a front line in the struggle between liberal democracy and authoritarianism, I traveled across that country last year to document the realities of life during wartime. Those stories became “Stop Stealing the Future: Chronicles of the Ukrainian Resistance,” which is now also included in the new expanded second edition of “My Fabulous Fascist Summer Vacation.”
Over the coming weeks and months, I’ll be sharing interviews from both journeys free here and on Substack. Together, they offer a sober look at America’s changing role in the world and, as one prominent Austrian author told me over coffee in Vienna, its emergence as a cheerleader for authoritarian political movements.
This is my seventh book, and each has been an adventure. If you’ve enjoyed following these travels and support independent journalism, I hope you’ll consider buying a copy. The ebook will be released next week.
My sincere thanks to everyone who helped make this project possible, especially editor Tom Vater, editorial contributors Jamie Wrate and Nicole Maron, designer Alexandru Oprescu, and the many Kickstarter supporters who believed in the journey from the beginning.
